Datacom was founded in 1965 in Christchurch, originally as Computer Bureau Ltd, and is headquartered in Wellington. It is majority New Zealand-owned, with Evander Management, the family company of John Holdsworth, holding 54.92 per cent and the New Zealand Superannuation Fund holding 44.08 per cent. Group chief executive Greg Davidson leads the company. Datacom reported revenue of about NZ$1.47 billion and around 6,000 staff in its 2024 financial year.

Datacom operates five New Zealand data centres: Orbit on Auckland's North Shore, Highbrook in East Tāmaki, South Auckland, acquired from T4 and announced on 31 March 2026 with customer switchover the same day, Kapua in Te Rapa on the northern edge of Hamilton, Abel in central Wellington and Gloucester in Christchurch. The company said the purchase brings its total number of sovereign data centres across New Zealand to five. The Kapua, Abel and Gloucester sites are rated to the Uptime Institute Tier III standard by the company's account, and Datacom markets Orbit as its most certified site for operational management.
